History of Scarsdale Improvement Corporation

In the early twentieth century the New York Central Railroad was being developed throughout what is now suburban New York. To complement the railroad, small, basic towns were quickly built and developed in most areas.

The current beauty of Scarsdale is the result of a collective effort from the early residents to break away from a basic development. In order to make this a reality, Scarsdale Improvement Corporation was created. Rush Wilson was elected the first president of the corporation in 1920 and the first order of business was to develop the land. The corporation immediately got to work building the structures which make up East Parkway and would go on to acquire more property to create what is present day Scarsdale.

This land has been owned by Scarsdale Improvement Corporation since its inception in 1920. In 1996, our current President, Rush Wilson III assumed the position and still holds it today. It is no accident that visitors to our hamlet are impressed with what they see. Our village owes its enviable appearance to the landlords, local government, and community participation.
